Periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, often presents few symptoms in the early stages. If you have red, swollen gums and experience bleeding when your brush, you may suffer from periodontal disease. Though you may not be aware of gum disease, it will not heal on its own. Left untreated, it can cause a host of systemic health problems. An assessment of your gums is crucial to identify and alleviate the symptoms of periodontal disease and halt its progression.
Electronic charting aids in the early detection and monitoring of gum disease. Treatment options for early-stage gum disease, known as gingivitis, include a deep cleaning by one of our skilled hygienists and instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques. More advanced cases of periodontal disease may respond to scaling and root planing, as well as antibiotic therapy. If your gum disease is severe, Dr. Lieberman may recommend surgery to remove diseased gum tissue. We use a soft-tissue laser instead of a scalpel for gum surgery to promote a more comfortable, positive experience. Most patients are able to eat immediately following surgery!
