Call Your Emergency Dentist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step you should take after discovering a lost dental crown is to contact your emergency dentist<\/a>. When you call the dental office, describe the situation in detail. Let them know when the crown came off, whether you are experiencing pain, and if you still have the crown in your possession. This information will help the dental team prepare for your visit and guide you through any immediate at-home steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try to Reattach the Crown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have the crown and it appears to be intact, you may be able to temporarily reattach it until you can see your dentist. First, gently clean the inside of the crown and the surface of your tooth using a toothbrush and water. You can purchase over-the-counter dental cement from a pharmacy to help hold the crown in place. (Alternatively, you could try to attach it with a bit of toothpaste or sugar-free chewing gum.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apply a small amount of dental cement to the inside of the crown, then carefully position it over your tooth and bite down gently to set it. If it does not easily slide on, do not try to force it. Instead, place the crown in a small storage case and bring it with you to your dental appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect the Tooth from Damage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of whether you can fit the crown back on your tooth, you need to be careful to avoid additional damage. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth to reduce the risk of sensitivity, pain, or fracture. Stick to soft foods and avoid sticky, hard, or crunchy items that could damage the tooth or cause discomfort. Keep the area clean by gently brushing and rinsing with warm salt water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losing a dental crown can be stressful, but taking the right steps will help protect your tooth and oral health. Reach out to your dentist as soon as possible and follow their advice on how to manage the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
