They can restore your ability to eat many foods, and they can look quite natural. Unfortunately, though, they do have their downsides, including the fact that they need to be replaced every 5 – 7 years or so. How can you tell if it is time to replace your denture with a new one? Keep on the lookout for these five signs:

Your Dentures Feel Loose

After you lose your natural teeth, your jawbone begins to change shape, which in turn affects the way your dentures fit. Visiting your dentist for periodic relines (adjustments) can ensure that your dentures maintain their fit for as long as possible. However, there will come a point when it is no longer possible to reline the dentures to make them secure and comfortable. Your dentist will let you know that it is time to start thinking about getting a new prosthetic.

Your Dentures Are No Longer Comfortable

You should be able to wear your dentures all day without experiencing serious discomfort. If you find that your teeth are causing you pain or even contributing to gum sores, you should definitely visit your dentist. It is possible that the dentures or damaged or their fit has changed so much that they can no longer serve you well.

It Is Difficult to Eat and Speak

Once you get used to your dentures, it should be easy for you to eat with confidence and speak clearly. But if you find that your prosthetic frequently tends to slip out of place when you are eating, you are using more adhesive than you used to in an effort to keep it secure, or your speech has changed, it’s time to consult with your dentist. They will examine your denture and let you know if it is time to part ways with it.

There are Visible Signs of Damage or Discoloration

A damaged denture is more likely to harm your gums and other tissues in your mouth, and a severely discolored denture can hurt your confidence. Do not try to fix such issues on your own; you might accidentally end up worsening the damage. Your dentist might be able to repair your prosthetic, but you should also prepare yourself for the possibility that you will have to get a new one.

You Are Ready for an Upgrade

Even if there is nothing wrong with your current denture, you might decide to replace it with a more stable option. You may be a candidate for an implant denture, which is anchored in the mouth via prosthetic tooth roots. Implant dentures are sturdier and longer lasting than their traditional counterparts.

Is it time to replace your dentures? Your dentist will be happy to let you know if you should start considering your options for a new prosthetic.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Erin Page are experienced restorative dentist.
