Starting Invisalign is exciting because it means you are taking an important step toward a straighter, healthier smile. Still, aligner therapy comes with some responsibilities. One of the most important is wearing your trays for the recommended amount of time each day. In many cases, that means keeping them in place for 22 hours out of every 24! At first, that number might sound intimidating. The good news is that with a bit of planning, meeting your daily Invisalign wear time can become a normal part of your routine.
Why the 22-Hour Rule Matters
Invisalign works by applying gentle, consistent pressure to your teeth; each set of aligners is designed to move your teeth a little closer to their ideal positions. When your trays are out of your mouth, that pressure stops. If they are out too often or for too long, your teeth may not move according to schedule. As a result, your treatment could take longer than expected, and your next set of aligners might feel tighter or more uncomfortable than it should. Wearing your trays for 20 – 22 hours each day gives your treatment the consistency it needs to stay on track.
How To Meet the 22-Hour a Day Requirement
Time Your Meals
Because you have about two hours each day without your aligners, it is wise to spend that time carefully. For example, you might take 15 minutes for breakfast, 30 minutes for lunch, and about an hour for dinner. That still leaves a little extra time for brushing, flossing, and rinsing your trays. If you enjoy lingering over your evening meal, consider keeping breakfast and lunch short so you have more flexibility later in the day.
Eat Enough at Each Meal
Snacking throughout the day can quickly use up your available aligner-free time. To reduce the urge to graze, make your meals filling and balanced. Protein, fiber, and healthy fats can help you stay satisfied for longer. You might also find it helpful to plan your meals ahead of time so you are less tempted to remove your trays for small bites here and there.
Use an App
It can be surprisingly easy to lose track of how long your aligners have been out. An app, such as TrayMinder, can help you monitor your daily wear time and send reminders when it is time to put your trays back in. If you prefer a simpler approach, you can also use alarms or timers on your phone.
Be Quick with Your Oral Hygiene
After eating, try to brush and floss promptly before reinserting your aligners. You should also rinse your trays so they feel fresh and clean. Keeping a small oral hygiene kit with you can make this easier when you are at work, school, or out running errands. The faster you complete these steps, the sooner your aligners can get back to doing their job.
Meeting the 22-hour rule with Invisalign requires planning and effort, but once you get into a routine, you should find it easy to keep your treatment on track!
