Oral Hygiene Basics: Can You Brush Dentures Without Removing Them?

Keeping up with oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your health; it is just as vital as exercise and sleep! And that remains true even if unfortunate circumstances have caused you to lose your natural teeth. If you wear dentures, you might wonder how you can best maintain a healthy and clean mouth. Is it okay to brush your dentures without removing them? This blog post explains what you should know.

Brushing Dentures While Wearing Them: Safety and Limitations

Gently brushing your dentures while they remain in your mouth is generally safe for both your prosthetic teeth and your oral tissues. Choose a soft-bristled brush and steer clear of abrasive or harmful cleaning substances. For example, regular toothpaste may scratch your artificial teeth, so it is best to use products designed specifically for dentures. Brushing after each meal can help remove food particles and keep your mouth feeling fresh throughout the day.

Why Removing Dentures Matters for Oral Health

Although cleaning your dentures while they are in your mouth offers some benefits, this method should not be your primary approach to denture care. Every evening, you should take your dentures out so you can clean your gums, the underside of your dentures, and all the small crevices of your prosthetic that cannot be reached while you are wearing them.

Neglecting to remove your dentures for thorough cleanings may lead to several problems, such as oral infections, unpleasant breath, stains on your dentures, and other complications.

Tips for Thorough Denture Cleaning

Here are some additional tips and reminders to help you maintain excellent oral hygiene as a denture wearer:

  • Use a soft brush created for use on dentures to protect your prosthetic from scratches and damage.
  • Clean all chewing surfaces and the base of your dentures. The more thorough you are, the more likely it is that you will avoid future issues with your dentures.
  • Stand over a towel or basin of water while cleaning your dentures so they are less likely to break if you accidentally drop them.
  • Soak your dentures in a cleansing solution on a regular basis to help keep them fresh and free from bacteria.
  • Clean your oral tissues by gently wiping your gums with a soft cloth, brushing your tongue, and rinsing with mouthwash.
  • Regularly visit your dentist for checkups and to receive personalized tips on how to maintain both your dentures and your natural oral tissues.

Brushing your dentures without taking them out of your mouth is certainly possible, but doing so provides only limited benefits. It is vastly preferable to remove your prosthetic teeth for thorough daily cleaning.
