A toothache can be one of the most distracting types of pain, and it can seem even worse at night! It could even keep you awake and prevent you from getting the rest that your body needs. Of course, you should call your emergency dentist first thing in the morning to request an appointment — but what can you do in the meantime? This blog post provides tips that may help you manage your discomfort and finally get a bit of shuteye.

Keep Your Head Elevated

When you lie flat, blood rushes to your head, which can intensify the pain. Therefore, elevating your head can help alleviate some of the throbbing pain associated with a toothache. Use an extra pillow or two to prop yourself up slightly, or sleep in a recliner to position your head at a more comfortable angle.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can be highly effective at reducing pain and inflammation. Make sure to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. Taking these medications about 30 minutes before you plan to go to bed can help dull the pain enough to allow you to fall asleep.

Apply Ice

Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the sore tooth can help numb the area and reduce inflammation. Wrap some ice in a cloth or use a cold pack and hold it to your cheek for 15 – 20 minutes before bed. This can provide temporary relief and make it easier to drift off to sleep.

Rinse with Warm Salt Water

A warm salt water rinse can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief from toothache pain. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, swish it around in your mouth for about 30 seconds, and then spit it out. This can help clean the area around the tooth and reduce pain and swelling.

Apply Clove Oil

Clove oil contains eugenol, which has natural anesthetic and antibacterial properties. Applying a small amount of clove oil to the affected area can help numb the pain. Use a cotton ball or swab to apply the oil directly to the tooth and surrounding gums. Be cautious not to use too much, as clove oil can be potent.

Falling asleep with a toothache can seem almost impossible! Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ease the pain so you can drift off to sleep.
