Young woman thinking, has questions about sedation dentistryIf the idea of visiting the dentist makes you feel a little anxious or afraid, you can rest assured that your dental team understands your concerns. They want to do all they can to help you feel comfortable and relaxed. To that end, they may suggest that you be sedated during treatment. What is sedation dentistry? What can you expect from it? In this blog post, you will find answers to these and other frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications that induce feelings of relaxation and well-being. There are different methods of sedation. Nitrous oxide, a special type of gas that is administered through a nasal mask, is relatively mild. Intravenously administered sedation is much more powerful. Oral conscious sedation, which involves the use of a pill that you swallow before your appointment, is another option.

What Does Sedation Feel Like?

Different types of sedation induce different feelings. Nitrous oxide may make you feel relaxed or even a little silly (it is also known as “laughing gas”). Deeper forms of sedation may make you feel drowsy, though they do not cause unconsciousness. They may also cause you to forget what happens during your dental appointment.

How Safe Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is very safe for most patients. Your dental team will screen you to ensure that you don’t have any risk factors that could make sedation inadvisable for you. Throughout your appointment, you will be closely monitored so your dentist can take prompt action on the small chance that anything goes wrong. Rest assured, though, that negative reactions to sedation are fairly uncommon, and when they do occur, they are usually mild.

Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Most patients are eligible for sedation. It is particularly helpful for those who suffer from dental anxiety. It is also useful for individuals who find it difficult to sit still for extended periods, have a strong gag reflex, or are not easily numbed by local anesthesia.

There are only a few groups for whom sedation is not considered suitable. For example, it is not generally advisable for pregnant women or people with certain respiratory conditions or allergies.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

The cost of sedation depends on which type of medication is being used, the dosage required, and other factors. Nitrous oxide is usually the most affordable option. Your dental team will be able to provide you with a personalized cost estimate when you attend your consultation.
