Dental Bridge Failure: Why Does It Happen?

Dental bridges are a popular solution for tooth replacement because they offer stability, a natural appearance, and other benefits. Many individuals get to enjoy their bridge for many years, benefiting from improved function and confidence that they can rely on day after day. However, dental bridge failure can occur, and it often does so unexpectedly. Why does this problem happen, and is there anything you can do to help your restoration endure for as long as possible?

Poor Oral Hygiene and Decay of Abutment Teeth

A dental bridge cannot develop cavities, but the teeth that support the bridge, known as abutment teeth, remain vulnerable to decay. Bacteria may accumulate beneath the restoration and attack the underlying teeth, leading to deterioration. Once these abutment teeth become weakened, the bridge may lose stability.

Daily oral care plays a significant role in preventing decay and protecting your abutment teeth. Be sure to brush and floss regularly, paying special attention to the gumline and the area beneath the bridge. Specialized tools, such as floss threaders or water flossers, can assist with cleaning beneath your restoration.

Physical Trauma and Damage

Excessive physical force poses a significant threat to the integrity of a dental bridge. Activities such as biting into hard objects, chewing on ice, and consuming foods with bones or kernels can damage your restoration. It is always wise to be mindful of what you put into your mouth!

If you tend to grind and clench your teeth, that can be very damaging. Participation in sports also comes with a risk of harm to both your mouth and your restoration. A custom mouthguard, whether it is made for sports or specifically to prevent teeth grinding, can shield both your natural oral tissues and your bridge from harm.

Lack of Bone Support and Gum Health

Abutment teeth anchor your dental bridge to your jawbone. Loss of bone density due to gum disease or other factors may undermine the foundation of these teeth. As the bone weakens, the dental bridge may lose its anchorage and fail.

Support for jawbone health requires attention to oral hygiene, regular dental visits, a nutritious diet, and refraining from tobacco use. Your good habits will contribute to the long-term stability of your dental restorations and natural teeth alike.

Lack of Professional Care and Maintenance

Routine dental examinations and cleanings are critical for maintaining dental bridges. Your dentist can monitor the condition of your restoration, identify early signs of wear or damage, and provide tailored advice for care. Skipping these appointments may result in unnoticed problems and increase the risk of bridge failure.

A dental bridge is not meant to last forever, but it should also not fail before its time! Ask your dentist for personalized tips on how to protect your restoration from damage.
