schenectady emergency dentist offers same day careIn our increasingly busy world, planning is crucial. You can usually plan your dental visits in advance — but when a throbbing toothache or dental injury catches you by surprise, what do you do? Is It a Dental Emergency?

Too many adults delay the prompt dental care they need because they are reluctant to recognize they are having an emergency. In general, if you are in pain or experiencing significant swelling, you need urgent attention. But that doesn’t always mean you have to head to the emergency room — your dentist at Capital Smiles can solve most dental emergencies.

  • A tooth that’s been knocked our dislodged. If it happens to you, first collect the tooth and keep it wet (either in the cheek or a cup of milk). Reach the dentist’s office within two hours and there’s a good chance we can reattach the tooth.
  • A severe toothache. Try to control pain with an over-the-counter pain medication. Seek dental professional care immediately.
  • A broken or fractured tooth.  Rinse with warm salt water and apply an ice pack to the affected cheek to ease pain and reduce swelling.  Call to schedule an appointment.
  • Something lodged between teeth. If you can’t remove the object gently with dental floss, stop and contact your dentist. Never approach your teeth and gums with a tool.
  • Broken dental work, like a filling, crown, bridge, etc. contact Capital Smiles to assist you in repairs.  Do not attempt to super glue or use adhesives to reattach, because these can pose choking risks or aspiration risks and could harm your gums and potentially other teeth.

If your emergency happens during business hours, we will get you in as soon as is necessary given your particular situation. We will even make arrangements for current patients to come in after hours, if needed to save a tooth or reduce severe pain.  Feel free to visit us from 9 am to 7 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, or from 8 am to 3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’re here for you when you need us!
