Tooth Extractions in the Capital District

Capital District dental implantsThere may come a time when Dr. Erin Page recommend you have a tooth extracted. While tooth extractions are viewed as a last resort, it may be necessary.  An extraction is needed when a tooth has become broken or damaged past the point of repair, has significant bone loss, infection or even a crack.  In some cases, extraction may be preventative, such as wisdom tooth removal or necessary to create space in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to facilitate tooth alignment.  Depending on the reason for the extraction, our Capital District dentists may recommend you have the tooth replaced with a prosthetic. Common tooth replacement options include dental bridges, dentures, or dental implants. As a comprehensive general dental practice that also offers the Capital District dental implants, we provide the extractions and prosthetics you need for a healthy, complete smile.

Most extraction fall into 2 categories – either a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. A simple extraction does not need any removal of the bone around the tooth or cutting the tooth into pieces to be removed, while a surgical extraction involves cutting into the gum, bone and or cutting the tooth into pieces to be removed. Our Capital District dental practice prides itself on making these procedures as comfortable as possible for our patients.

Depending on the cause of the tooth extraction and which tooth has been extracted, Dr. Page  may recommend a prosthetic replacement. There are multiple options available when replacing missing teeth. Our implant dentists in Niskayuna will recommend the best option for you.

Fixed Bridges

A fixed bridge can replace missing teeth using a prosthetic (pontic) tooth anchored to real adjacent teeth (abutments) in your mouth.  It cannot be removed, and thus is called a “fixed” prosthesis.

Dentures

Dentures are a convenient way to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures can be used to replace one or more missing teeth, while full dentures replace all of the teeth on the top or bottom arch.  These can be removed from your mouth and are therefore called “removable.”   These are the most economical prostheses.

Dental Implants

Dental implants can be used to replace one or all missing teeth by surgically inserting titanium posts to hold prosthetic teeth in place.  Titanium implants are fixed in your mouth, but what they are connected to can be either fixed or removable in nature.  Dental implants to replace missing teeth are restored with crowns, or dental implants can be attached to bridges or dentures.  These all are the state of the art restorations.
