Which Type of Denture Adhesive Is Best?

As a denture wearer, you should feel confident that your prosthetic will stay in place all day long whether you are eating, drinking, speaking, or laughing. In order for that to be a reality, your dentures should be well-made and have a secure fit. However, you might also need some adhesive. But which type of denture adhesive should you use? This blog post can help you compare your options.

Do You Really Need Adhesive?

Before you go out and buy adhesive, you should take a moment to consider whether you truly need it. If your denture does not fit well, using adhesive to “force” it to stay in your mouth is not a good idea. Rather, you should visit your dentist. They may adjust your denture or recommend that you get a new one.

Also, if you have allergies, you should check the ingredients label of any adhesive that you are considering buying. Most adhesives contain zinc. While allergies to zinc are rare, they do occur in some individuals.

Your Denture Adhesive Options

If you determine that you do need denture adhesive, you will have to decide whether you want to use a cream, a powder, or strips. Here is an overview of each option:

Adhesive Cream

Cream is one of the most popular types of adhesive. All you have to do is squeeze a small amount onto the base of your denture and look forward to a secure prosthetic all day long. One potential disadvantage of cream is that some people tend to apply too much, which can affect both the fit and feel of their dentures.

Adhesive Powders

To apply an adhesive powder, you just sprinkle a bit onto your denture before placing your prosthetic in your mouth. Many people find it easier to use the right amount of powder (as opposed to creams). The most common complaint about powders is that they can make a little mess on whatever surface is below your denture.

Adhesive Strips

Adhesive strips are pre-cut, so although you might have to trim them a bit for them to fit perfectly, they tend to be very convenient to apply. Their downside is that they cost slightly more than powders and creams.

Shopping for Denture Adhesive

Here are a few pointers that may help you when you are shopping for denture adhesive:

  • Online reviews can be helpful in determining whether a product is high-quality and easy to use.
  • You can always ask your dental team if they recommend any specific products.
  • You might need to try a few different options before you find your favorite adhesive product.

Denture adhesive might allow you to have a better experience with your prosthetic teeth! It could allow you to smile, eat, and speak all day long without any embarrassing slips.
