Woman with TMJ headaches, may benefit from BOTOX®BOTOX® is primarily known as a cosmetic treatment. Indeed, it is great for relaxing wrinkles and helping patients achieve a more youthful appearance. But did you know that it also has medical applications? One issue that it is commonly able to treat is TMD (also known as TMJ), along with its associated headaches. Let’s talk about why TMJ headaches occur and why BOTOX® often proves to be an effective pain relief measure.

How Does TMD Cause Headaches?

TMD is a condition that affects the TMJ, the joint that connects the mandible to the rest of the head. The TMJ is a complex joint, and when something goes wrong with it, it can cause pain and tension in the surrounding areas. Headaches often result. TMD headaches may also occur because the TMJ can affect the structures beneath it, including the neck and shoulders. Tension in these areas may contribute to head pain.

If you are prone to migraines, TMD can be especially troublesome for you because it may increase the frequency and/or severity of your migraines.

How Can BOTOX® Help?

BOTOX® works by relaxing the muscles that it is injected into. When it is used to treat TMD, it can relieve the tension in the jaw muscles that are affecting the nearby structures. As a result, the frequency of your headaches may lessen.

There are a few other ways in which BOTOX® might help to relieve your headaches:

What to Expect with BOTOX® Treatment for TMD

If you are interested in receiving BOTOX® to relieve your TMD and its associated headaches, get in touch with a doctor or dentist who is qualified to administer the treatment. After they learn about your symptoms and examine your jaw, they will be able to recommend your next steps.

If it looks like BOTOX® is right for you, you can expect the injections to be quick and relatively comfortable. It might be several days before the BOTOX® begins to take effect and you start to notice a reduction in your symptoms. Your treatment provider will advise you on how often you should return for further injections. They may also suggest that you use other TMD treatments along with BOTOX® to experience the best results possible.

Of course, BOTOX® cannot prevent all headaches and migraines. If your pain is related to something other than your TMJ, you may need to speak to your primary care practitioner for advice and treatment.

BOTOX® isn’t just for wrinkles! It has the potential to prevent headaches, relax overworked jaw muscles, and improve your overall quality of life.
