Fixed Bridges vs. Partial Dentures: Which Do You Need?

In order to enjoy optimum oral health, it is important that you replace missing teeth in a timely manner. Admittedly, though, it can be a bit confusing to compare your treatment options. Should you get a fixed bridge, a partial denture, or some other type of tooth replacement? This article provides important information that can help steer you in the right direction.

Bridges and Partials: The Basics

There are different types of both bridges and partials. Usually, though, the term fixed bridge or traditional bridge refers to a restoration that has a crown on each end. The crowns get attached to the natural teeth that surround an empty space. One or more artificial teeth (called pontics) fill in the space between the crowns. Bridges are usually permanently attached to the teeth.

A partial denture is a removable restoration that can replace multiple teeth. Usually, partials have an acrylic base along with acrylic or porcelain teeth. Small metal or acrylic attachments help a partial denture to stay secure in the mouth during eating and speaking.

Both options are custom-made for each patient, come at a reasonable price, have a relatively short treatment timeline, and have the potential to last for several years.

Which Is Best for You?

Your dentist is the best person to help you determine which type of tooth replacement you should pursue.

A fixed bridge might be best for you if:

  • You are missing just one or two teeth.
  • You prefer a permanent form of tooth replacement rather than a removable one.
  • You want your smile to look as natural as possible.
  • You have strong natural teeth that can provide sturdy support for a bridge.

On the other hand, you might be a better candidate for a partial denture if:

  • Your missing teeth are not all adjacent to one another.
  • You are missing more than one or two teeth.
  • You prefer removable tooth replacement.
  • You do not want your natural teeth to be modified so they can support a bridge.

Comparing All of Your Options

Depending on your oral health, how many teeth you have lost, and other factors, it is possible that neither a bridge nor a partial is best for you. Your dentist might recommend a full denture or implant-supported tooth replacement. (Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that support artificial teeth.) Regardless of how you move forward, you can look forward to regaining a complete and confident smile!
